The MTR Corporation attaches great importance to environmental protection in the planning and design process when implementing railway projects. On this basis, the Tuen Mun South Extension project makes every effort to minimise impacts on the surrounding environment and communities, such as minimising the works areas in Tuen Mun Park.

The Corporation is always mindful in handling trees along the alignment during construction, with a priority to retain trees at their original locations as much as possible. When removal or transplantation of trees is unavoidable due to space constraints or construction needs, the Corporation follows the tree preservation guidelines and technical circulars issued by the government and seeks the government’s approval for tree removal applications and compensatory planting schemes.

Suitable parts of the removed trees will be sent to the recycling centre Y·PARK for recycling and upcycling in order to reduce waste of wood resources and give the timber a second life by transforming it into useful recycled products, such as construction boards, wooden furniture, arts and decorations, as well as horticultural and planting materials like compost and mulch.

After the completion of works, trees will be replanted according to the government’s tree preservation technical circulars, giving priority to replanting trees within Tuen Mun District. The Corporation will continue to liaise with the relevant government departments on proper replanting arrangements at appropriate locations.

Implementing Environmental Protection Concepts Throughout Construction

The project team will use prefabricated components as far as practicable to minimise the environmental impact of on-site construction processes, reduce construction material waste and enhance the sustainability of the stations. In addition, the Corporation is also considering the use of environmentally friendly building materials to further reduce the carbon footprint during construction.
