Race Against Time for the Demolition of Siu Hei Bridge

Tuen Mun South Station, the future terminus station of the Tuen Ma Line will be constructed as part of the MTR Tuen Mun South Extension project. The station will be located along Wu King Road near the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, serving the Tuen Mun South community.
It is not easy to carry out works in a developed area which is densely populated near Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. To create space for the construction of the elevated Tuen Mun South Station, the bridge deck of the Siu Hei Bridge across Wu King Road had to be temporarily demolished and will be re-provisioned and connected to the future Tuen Mun South Station. To ensure minimal impact on the surrounding neighourhood, the project team meticulously worked on calculations and procedures. The team firstly made use of daytime hours for preparation works, such as stablising and cutting the bridge segments as well as trials of the lifting works. Subsequently, the team utilised two midnight periods in July and August to lift a total weight of approximately 190 tonnes of bridge’s roof and decks in phases, with the working hours for the lifting operation per night being less than two hours.

A team with over 60 professionals utilised the limited working hours from night to dawn to complete the removal and lifting of the Siu Hei Bridge’s roof and deck in two overnight periods in July and August 2024, marking a significant step forward in constructing the new Tuen Mun South Station.

Continuous Communications with Local Stakeholders Caring Ambassadors Assisted Residents in Familiarisation

Apart from planning for construction works, the project team also spent time disseminating the latest information about the footbridge demolition arrangements to the community via various channels. In addition to site walks with district councilors and local stakeholders, giant countdown banners and clear signage were in place prior to the closure of Siu Hei Bridge, and caring ambassadors were deployed to give out leaflets and assist pedestrians in familiarizing themselves with the new arrangements. During the footbridge closure, pedestrians can still use the at-grade crossing near Wu Chui Road to cross Wu King Road, while the footbridge ramp connecting Siu Hei Shopping Centre remains open.
