As the Tuen Mun South Extension (TME) is a community railway, the project team organised a series of vibrant educational activities for nearly 600 primary and kindergarten students from four schools in Tuen Mun during the summer holiday. This led the participants into the world of railway engineering through interaction with engineers and they experienced an upcycling workshop at the new GREEN@TUEN MUN, which was recently re-provisioned under the TME project.
Since MTR started its first passenger services in 1979, the railway network has been expanding to connect communities and enhance quality of life. The project team shared with students about the development of railway as well as the new railway project that is currently growing with them, i.e. the TME project. The atmosphere was electric as students enthusiastically engaged in the interactive Q&A sessions, eagerly raising their hands to respond.
To broaden students’ horizons, the project team also partnered with railway engineers from the Civil Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, sharing insights into the field of engineering and the duty of engineers with students from the A.D & F.D. of Pok Oi Hospital Mrs. Cheng Yam On School and the Islamic Primary School.
To support STEAM education on campus, students from the Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate) were invited to visit the newly re-provisioned GREEN@TUEN MUN recycling station, where they explored green and upgraded features of the facility. The project team also hosted a green workshop for the WFB Mantra Institute Nursery School. To nurture future railway engineering experts from a young age, the highlight of the event was encouraging students to apply mechanics and green concepts they learnt from the new railway project. Unleashing their creativity, students transformed used plastic bottle caps into creative “Engineer T-Chai Tumbler Toys”!
