As the Tuen Mun South Extension Project (TME) commences construction over the Tuen Mun River, the project team co-organised a “Viaduct STEAM Workshop” with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) on 26 October 2024. Integrating railway knowledge into STEAM education via fun and stimulating activities, the workshop educated students about the features of constructing viaducts over the river, fostered their creative thinking and brought engineering knowledge into the school campus. Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate), the participating school is one of the schools in close proximity to the future Tuen Mun South Station*.
About 20 students were divided into groups and unleashed their design thinking to build unique viaducts using simple materials like pencils and rubber bands under the guidance of the TME project team and HKIE representatives. The creations underwent an exciting competition to prove their structural strength.
In addition, Mr Joe Wong, Senior Construction Manager of MTR Corporation, shared his career journey with students, encouraging them to join the engineering field in the future, while Mr Cyrus Wu representing the HKIE also introduced the evolution of the development of bridges.
“We appreciate the TME project team’s dedication in deepening students’ and parents’ understanding of railway construction through various educational activities. This workshop not only provided students with the opportunity to interact with engineers and enriched their engineering knowledge, but also offered a deeper insight into local community development and an understanding of how engineers shape the betterment of the society,” said Mr Jimmy Ng, Principal of the Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate).
