Tuen Mun South Extension Contributes to STEAM Education Collaborates with Schools for Hoarding Drawing Competition and Parents’ Day

To enhance local acceptance and encourage the community to embrace the Tuen Mun South Extension railway project, the TME project team recently collaborated with four schools in the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier area for a “Tuen Mun South Extension Project Hoarding Drawing Competition”. Under the theme of “My Ideal Railway Community”, the competition encouraged students to transform their anticipation towards the future railway and the community into vivid and fascinating drawings.

In support of STEAM education at the schools in the vicinity of TME project, the Tuen Mun South Extension Project Hoarding Drawing Competition was held and four schools namely YCH Law Chan Chor Si Primary School, Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate), TWGHs Sun Hoi Directors’ College, and Carmel Bunnan Tong Memorial Secondary School were invited to participate in the competition.

After two rounds of prudent review by the judging panel which consisted of representatives from the Project and the contractor, the top three drawings in four categories, including lower primary, upper primary, junior high, and senior high, were identified and the Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 10 July 2024.

TME Drawing Competition Award Presentation Ceremony was held to acknowledge the winners, which was followed by a visit to the “Station Rail Voyage” exhibition.

The Ceremony was joined by guests from the Tuen Mun District Office, Highways Department, MTR Corporation, and the contractor. The schools’ representatives, finalists, winners and their parents were also invited to witness this joyful moment.

“The competition not only cultivates students’ artistic and creative abilities, but also deepens their understanding of the significance of new railway development in the community. We hope that through this competition, students could recognise that they are able to be part of this railway construction project, which is crucial to the community, and can bring much positive energy to the community with their talents,” said Mr Walter Lam, Project Manager – TME & HSK of MTR Corporation.

Kong Hei-Tung, the first runner-up in the lower primary category

“I really like ‘T Chai’, it feels like having a superpower to create a new station for us to enjoy convenient railway journeys and go around!” said Kong Hei-tung, first runner-up of the lower primary category from the Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate). While expressing her excitement about the future Tuen Mun South Station, her mother also expressed anticipation towards the project’s completion, which will facilitate residents’ commuting and alleviate traffic burdens in the district.

This competition integrated the TME railway project into the schools’ STEAM education, cultivating students’ creative thinking and design capabilities as well as enhancing students’ awareness of community development and strengthening their sense of belonging to the community, thus nurturing the future talents. The close partnership between the MTR Corporation, schools and the community provides students with more diversified learning opportunities and promotes their all-round development with the STEAM education approach.

Taking the TME Project into the community – Project team joins School’s Parents’ Day

Students and parents enjoyed TME themed activities at the Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate) Parents’ Day. The principal (lower right) also participated in the games.

Additionally, the TME project team and New Railway Projects Youth Ambassadors from the Lingnan University hosted a booth at the Parents’ Day of the Taoist Ching Chung Primary School (Wu King Estate) on 12 July.

The latest project updates were introduced to students and parents, while incorporating elements of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to inspire students’ innovative thinking at the game zones. The 3D model game demonstrating the demolition process of the Siu Hei Bridge was particularly popular, allowing students to grasp the significance of removing the bridge to make space for the construction of Tuen Mun South Station. They also expressed anticipation for the bridge’s future connection to Tuen Mun South Station after re-provisioning. The project team introduced construction knowledge and project information in a simple and easy to understand way, which demonstrated synergy with the school’s STEAM education development, further strengthening the collaborative relationship between the railway project and schools.
